How to check and claim

  1. Open the Life Insurance Policy Locator from naic.org (Consumer tab > Tools).

  2. Enter your contact details and the deceased person's information from the death certificate (SSN or ITIN, legal name, dates of birth and death, veteran status, your relationship).

  3. Wait: participating insurers check the request, and if a policy is found and you are the beneficiary, the insurer contacts you directly.

Claiming is free. Your state never charges a fee to search or to claim. Be careful with letters, calls or texts that ask for a fee, a percentage or your bank login to release money. Search the official state site yourself.
